Benefits of polished concrete

Polished concrete floors have many advantages, they are low maintenance and easy to clean.

Concrete is extremely durable and hard wearing, resistant to fire, rot and insects.

Polished concrete can also be beneficial to those with allergies or respiratory illnesses as it reduces pollutants such as dust, mould and mildew, therefore improving air quality.

Unlike timber or tiled floors  the look is continuous and seamless, there is no grout to keep clean and polished concrete floors are scratch resistant, and do not dint or need resealing.

Customise your Polished Concrete finish results

A variety of effects can be achieved by the amount of preliminary grinding that is done.

You can have different levels of exposure, which is the amount of stone that you can see in the finished result.

  • A Full Exposure gives a full stone effect,

  • Random Exposure as seen above, is where there are variances of stone showing

  • Light Random Exposure, which is a surface finish commonly called

"Salt and Pepper" finish is when minimal stone is seen

Additionally you can select your finished shine preference from a

Highly Polished Gloss or Semi-Gloss finish to a Low Sheen Satin or Matte look.

We are also very lucky to have such a vast availability of the types of stone that we can use in concrete to vary and create an individual look for your project.

You can choose different sizes, colours and types of aggregate (stone) to create your own stunning look, from a minimal grey to a mix of polished coloured stone or even a blend of coloured glass crystals that you can have shimmering through the surface finish.

Galaxy Polished Concrete - Existing and new floors

Existing Concrete Floors

Give your existing concrete floors a beautiful fresh look with our fabulous Mechanically Polished Concrete, we have the latest technique's & equipment to transform tired concrete into a stunning feature capturing its natural beauty, filling cracks, holes and other imperfections, leaving a smooth easy to clean grout free floor.

We have been asked on occasion about selecting stones or changing the colour of "Existing Concrete"

Question: Can you change the colour of your concrete or choose the stones when you have an existing concrete slab?  Sadly the answer is "No"

When we Polish Concrete or Grind & Seal concrete (with a clear sealer) it is the stones and materials that are already within your existing concrete that are exposed and you will see when we grind the surface of the concrete.

Although you are unable to select or add stones or colour to "Existing Concrete" you can still create your own special look to suit your style and design by selecting the level of grinding you would like, from lighter grinding to reveal less stone to a medium or full stone exposure, with more stone being revealed depending on how much we grind off from the surface of your concrete.

You can customize your look further by selecting your sheen finish from a soft low sheen look to a reflective high gloss finish.

An alternative way to change the colour of existing concrete is if you select the "Grind & Seal" method where we grind the concrete surface and then apply a coloured opaque top coat sealer to your concrete which is a paint-like coating. Concrete coatings are available in a range of colours.

New Concrete Floors

When pouring "New Concrete" you can create an even extra stunning look with variations of stones or selecting the colour of your concrete or both!

As well as talking to you about the style that suits you and choices regarding the amount of concrete grinding you would like to customize the amount of stone you wish to see and your preferred shine level,  if you are pouring a "New Concrete" floor we can also talk to you about the different concrete colours and aggregate (stone) choices that are available from Pre Mix concrete plants for different results before you pour your concrete.  It is when pouring a New Concrete slab that you can add colour pigment throughout the concrete including sandy, red or charcoal tones and add different coloured and sizes of stones and or pebbles to your concrete mix or even add Schneppa PolyGlow Recycled coloured glass pieces or glow in the dark stones.

If you are having new concrete laid and are considering having it polished, make sure that you explain this to the concreters before they commence.  For the best results it is recommended to use 32 MPa strength concrete when pouring your concrete to achieve a prime finished product.

A Galaxy Team Representative is always happy to assist, we can liaise with your concreter for you to ensure high density of the concrete and an even spread of aggregate.

"The better the concrete the better the concrete polish result."

Whether your concrete is New or Existing, all Concrete Polishing, Grind & Seal or Epoxy jobs are reliant on the concrete job itself and how it was treated when poured.

Results may vary dependent on factors such as the

MPa - (strength of the concrete) and if the concrete was vibrated or screed-ed properly.  Air holes within the concrete may vary adding to the natural appearance and finish result.

Finish results are also determined by the quality of products, the performance of operators and the equipment used.

At Galaxy our team strive for excellence, we are up to date with the latest techniques and technology & only use the best quality machinery and products that are available today.
